Chances are, you spend most of your day sitting. And if you’re doing it on some ancient office chair, you’ve likely felt the sore back, stiff neck or headaches that go along with lackluster support.

Don’t let these minor aches and pains turn into illness; nip them in the bud by learning to sit smart. There are only a few pieces to that ergonomic puzzle, so here’s a handy guide to help you choose which are best for you.

How to make your workspace ergonomic:

  • Invest in an ergonomic chair. The ideal chair should support ‘stacked seating’ — that is, a posture where your shoulders stack directly above your hips. Choose a design with low-back support and height-adjustable lever. A good ergonomic chair will properly support your torso and allow your feet to rest firmly on the floor. Or the ergonomic chair chosen for the office doesn’t suit your body type. If that’s the case, consider other accessories to support healthy seating.
  • If you find your feet dangling, suffer from swollen ankles or your legs feel cramped, invest in a footrest. The right footrest should keep your knees at a ninety-degree angle, promoting good blood-flow in your legs and feet.
  • If you simply can’t invest in a new chair, try a backrest. You have a unique posture and throughout the day, no matter the task, it should be supported. A good backrest reinforces your natural posture, but how do you know what that is? Scoot yourself half-out of your chair and plant your feet on the floor. Now, feel the curve in your low back. Adjust your backrest to suit that curve and you’ll avoid the dreaded slouch that leads to low back pain.
  • Another thing to consider is your work area. Chances are you probably own a chair with wheels at the base – allowing you to move freely around your workspace. Over time these wheels can mark-up or cause some damage to your floor, carpet or otherwise. Investing in a chairmat can help prevent such wear and tear.
